Early Saturday morning, June 1, 2019, members of the Anna Hurban District of Chicago joined close to 3,000 enthusiastic walkers at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois, for the annual “Walk to defeat ALS.” The walk is organized annually by the ALS Association of Greater Chicago to raise funds and awareness for the care, advocacy, research and education about this debilitating disease.
This year, the Chicago District Team joined the walk in honor of Helen Ledvora, past National, District and officer, as well as other FCSLA members and friends who have been afflicted with ALS. Gary Ledvora, S046, organized this event for the District, and welcomed our guests to an FCSLA host table in the walk’s “Tent City.” FCSLA guests were encouraged to walk, donate, or just relax in a beautiful setting along with their fellow members.
Our 20-plus walkers, from Senior Branches 421 and 046 ranged in age from 95 to 2 years of age. They stepped off at 9:30 a.m. and completed the two-mile route through historic Cantigny Park, each at their own pace. Funds were raised by sponsoring walkers through individual as well as Chicago District Branch sponsorships. In all, over $1,100 was raised for the ALS foundation. All who participated look forward to this becoming an annual event for the District.
