On Saturday, June 2, 2012, 25 members from the Chicago District gathered for its fifth annual Join Hands Day event at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital.
The members spent the afternoon with approximately 31 of the resident Veterans playing several rounds of bingo games. The Veterans were playing for a chance to win a portion of the available $500 commissary coupons given out as prizes. To make the playing field fair, each of the Veterans received an initial gift of $1 in coupons, and later on in the session, those who had not yet been lucky enough to win a game, received another $5 in coupons. A grand prize game of “cover your entire card” was played and the lucky Veteran won $50 in commissary coupons.
District President Mary Therese Tylus stated, “This was so far the largest turnout of Veterans and members to come together for this event since its inception. Both the Veterans and members had a wonderful time enjoying each others’ company.”
It truly was an afternoon of fun for all and a great way for our members to say thanks to these Veterans who have given so much for our American freedom.
