For the 13th consecutive year, the Cleveland District participated in Join Hands Day, but this time on two separate days. After all the rain we experienced, we were blessed with bright, sunny Saturdays, May 7th and May 21st.On May 7th, FCSLA members, young and old, cleared & weeded flower beds at the Light of Hearts Villa in Bedford, Ohio. Baking cookies, each in the shape of a hand, also took place, and they were placed in the freezer.
On May 21st, several FCSLA members conducted Bingo Games for the Villa residents, while another group frosted and decorated the cookies. A separate group of members pruned trees & bushes, planted flowers & greenery in all the areas where the Villa residents enjoy the outdoors. These areas include the gazebo, the water fall, & fish pond, plus out in front of the building to provide a very welcoming and beautiful curb appeal.
When the beautification was completed, everyone gathered (residents, & FCSLA members) out by the pond for a prayer service. Because it was also “Armed Forces Day”, Ralph Szubski played his accordion while everyone sang to a medley of the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force and Marine anthems, followed by “God Bless America” and the residents and volunteers released their balloons. Each one had a note inside that said, “when found, please phone to let us know where it landed.” Calls in the past came from Pennsylvania.
We ended the day with pizza, beverages, cake and hand cookies.
Susan, Sr. Regina and the Residents were so grateful for the time spent with them for making their “home” beautiful.
